From folder to screen.

Install and open Kino

1. Download and open Install Kino.
2. Choose Install Kino. The installer places the app in Applications and opens it.
3. Choose a folder, drop one onto the window, or use File → Open Folder….

Understand the browser

The toolbar shows separate video and photo counts. Select either count to change tabs. Items are newest first, and the grid repacks itself as the window changes. Portrait and landscape videos keep their complete shape. Kino shows only the complete rows that fit, then places the remainder on the next page instead of adding a vertical scrollbar.

• A subfolder containing both videos and photos stays together as a folder card.
• A video-only or photo-only subfolder is folded into the matching parent tab.
• Choose a folder card to enter it; choose Back or press Command-[ to return instantly.
• Use the page arrows in the toolbar to move through a large collection.

Preview and play video

• Move the pointer over a video to start one muted preview in place. The picture itself plays live along with the moving scrubber because Kino presents every new frame through the same composited surface as the controls. Moving from the first video to the second—or to any later video—hands the preview over cleanly and keeps its thumbnail visible only until that video’s first real frame is ready.
• Click the preview to turn on its audio.
• Use the speaker control at the top or drag the unobstructed scrubber at the bottom. The video and controls remain in one stable display surface while you seek, without turning blue, black, freezing, flashing, or restarting.
• Double-click a video to open the full player with audio on.
• Use Left and Right Arrow to open the previous or next video.
• Use Space to pause or resume, the main scrubber to seek, and the speaker control to adjust volume.
• Choose the caption button to cycle available subtitle tracks.
• Press Escape to close the player.

Kino bundles its playback runtime, so formats such as MP4, MOV, MKV, AVI, WMV, WebM, AV1, VP9, and HEVC do not require a separate codec install. A damaged file or unusual codec can still fail to play.

View photos

Switch to Photos and double-click an image. Kino centers and fits the full image first. Use Left and Right Arrow to move to the previous or next photo. Zoom to magnify it, then drag the image to inspect another area. Press Escape to return.

Flag and shape a session

Choose the flag on an item to build a working selection. The toolbar can flag or unflag a whole page and show only flagged items. Flags, manual order, and hidden videos belong to the current browsing session; they do not alter media files.

Choose Arrange to move videos up or down. Choose the small remove control on a video to hide it temporarily, then use Restore Hidden to bring hidden clips back.

Copy, move, or send to Trash

1. Flag the items you want to act on.
2. Choose Copy, Move, or Trash in the toolbar.
3. For Copy or Move, choose the destination folder.
4. Confirm the operation and let Kino finish before closing it.

If a destination already has the same filename, Kino creates a numbered copy instead of replacing it. Trash asks for confirmation and uses the macOS Trash, so the item remains recoverable until the Trash is emptied.

Fullscreen and keyboard controls

• Command-O: open a folder
• Command-[: return to the previous folder
• Left / Right Arrow: previous or next open video or photo; when the grid is visible, previous or next page
• Space: pause or resume an open video
• F: enter or leave fullscreen
• Escape: close an open video or photo

Updates and support

Kino checks its signed update feed quietly about once every 24 hours. It shows a prompt only when a newer release is available. Use Kino → Check for Updates… to check immediately.

Send an email if a particular media file will not open. Include the file extension, your Mac model, and macOS version; do not send private media unless you intend to share it.
